Today, organizations are focusing more and more on quality so that they can achieve the highest standards in their products and services and can beat the competition in their niche. Many companies are incorporating the Six Sigma methodology that involves implementing process improvements across the organization so that their maximum potential can be recognized. Six Sigma is a business management strategy that implements quality achievement metrics so as to increase customer satisfaction while eliminating errors related to quality and improving profitability. The Six Sigma project team in an organization includes members at various levels – the two most important ones being Green Belt and Black Belt. In this blog, we will understand these two belts in detail to know how they are different from each other.
Both Green Belts and Black Belts are trained professionals responsible for rationalizing process quality within the organization and improving the key metrics of the business. TQMI is a trusted name that holds both Black Belt and Green Belt Six Sigma Certification in India and has a 15 year experience to enhance business performance of organizations in terms of quality, productivity, cost, profitability, zero defects and customer satisfaction.
Six Sigma Green Belts, who are considered as future leaders of the company, do not have quality improvement as their sole responsibility. They have other tasks like process improvement and project management to deal with too. Green Belts analyze and solve quality problems and work under the direct supervision and mentor-ship of Black Belts to assist with the collection and analysis of data for Black Belt projects. Green Belts can get jobs like operating systems specialist, business process analyst, senior IT project manager, lead manufacturing engineer, project engineer and compliance structural engineer.
Green Belt requirement: Green Belts must have enough knowledge of Six Sigma processes and tools so that they can lead their teams and projects in the most efficient way possible. They must be proficient with defining, measuring, analyzing, improving and controlling everyday work problems. Candidates for Green Belt certification must have at least three years of experience related to at least one of the Green Belt Body of Knowledge areas. They must sit for and pass the 4 hour-100 question Green Belt Certification examination. Green Belts who wish to lead quality change initiatives on a larger scale across the organization need to undertake the Black Belt Certification.
Black Belts are leaders who have a thorough understanding of Six Sigma philosophies and principles, and serve as agents of change within the organization. They take up entire responsibility of spinning the quality standards and process improvements within the organization by implementing changes that are designed to eliminate deviations from quality standards to improve overall quality and profitability. They go beyond the Green Belts to include highly advanced analysis tools and techniques. They deeply understand team dynamics and are responsible for assigning roles and responsibilities to their team members. They direct and supervise the activities of Green Belts, and are capable enough to work under pressure and deliver projects on tie without compromising on quality standards. These are the candidates who can achieve top leadership positions within the organization if they have a positive never-say-die attitude. Their career options include project managers, manufacturing managers, and Vice-Presidents of operations.
Black Belt requirement: Black Belts must have at least three years of relevant experience in at least one of the Six Sigma Body of Knowledge areas. They must have completed at least one Six Sigma Black Belt project using appropriate tools to benefit the organization. If the candidate has completed two such projects, then the three-year experience requirement may be ignored. Black Belt candidates must sit for and pass the 4 hour-150 question open book Black Belt Certification examination.
